How to use Worm Castings
- Potting Soil: Mix 2 parts potting soil with 1 part worm castings to create a rich potting mix that retains moisture and nutrients better than ordinary potting soil and will result in healthier, more vigorous plants.
- Vegetable Garden: Incorporate 1/2″ to 14 layer of worm castings into the planting areas of your garden to create a healthy soil for the roots of your plants to thrive in. Repeat this process each time you replant sections of your garden as the season progresses. For transplanting place ½ handful into hole. Add plant and fill hole with soil.
- Annual Flower Beds: Incorporate 1/2″ to 1″ layer of worm castings into the top 4″ of your flower bed soil. For extra heavy clay soils or extra dry, sandy soils increase the amount of worm castings to 2″ or 3″. Don’t worry, using extra will never bring harm to your plants.
- Perennial Beds: For new perennial beds treat as described for annual flower beds. For existing perennials, top dress with 1/2 to 1 cup of worm castings per clump and gently work into the top 1/2″ of soil.
- Worm Casting Tea: Soak 1 part castings in 3 parts water for 12-24 hours. Stir well and water as usual. Casting tea is excellent for fruiting, flowering or difficult to access potted plants. Aerate if possible. Best when used within 24 hours.
- Landscape Ornamentals: For new planting, mix 1 part of worm castings with 2 parts existing soil and use this mix to backfill planing holes. Finish by top dressings before adding mulch with 1/2 cup of worm castings per gallon of plant container size.(ex 1.5 cups for 3 gallon plant, 2.5 cups for 5 gallon plant, etc.).
